A case was registered Tuesday against Sharma under non-bailable sections 125 and 153 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for his alleged communally provocative speech.

“We registered a case after we received a complaint and a CD of his speech. We are carrying out investigation before arresting him under these non-bailable sections. The content of the CD is also being examined,” said a police officer.

Police sources said Sharma made derogatory remarks following the withdrawl of candidature by Bahujan Samaj Party’s Haji Dilshan Ali and announcement of his support to Congress’ J.P. Agarwal.

Ali’s support will prove crucial for the Congress candidate as he was expected to make a serious dent into the Congress votebank.
