According to the education ministry of Saxony, the decision to permit headscarves in schools was aimed at ensuring the constitutional right of religious freedom.

The latest move is linked to house rules of a secondary school in the eastern city of Dresden which banned two Afghan girls from wearing the headscarf.

The parents of both students had been urged to find another school.
