Kuwait : UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has said that half of the population in strife-torn Syria is in urgent need of humanitarian aid.
“Half of the total population of Syrian people, nearly 9.3 million individuals, urgently need humanitarian aid,” reported BBC Wednesday quoting the UN chief during a donor conference held here to raise funds for the worsening humanitarian crisis in Syria.
The UN is calling on for $6.5 billion over the coming year for Syria, its biggest ever request for a single crisis.
It is thought that around that many people have been displaced by the war, both within the country and beyond. The UN says more than 100,000 people have died since the uprising began.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has increased its humanitarian aid for the Syrian people by $60 million to a total of $250 million, WAM news agency reported.
