Voreqe Bainimarama was reacting to comments by Australian army chief Lt Gen Peter Leahy, who said that last year's coup in Fiji had the potential to incite tensions that could leave the country vulnerable to instability. He added that the Australian army must make "prudent plans" to counter it.

"This comment by the Australian army chief does not deserve any reply," Bainimarama said Sunday. "There is nothing in Fiji that warrants an outside force. Simple," Fijilive website quoted him as saying.

Bainimarama said the security situation in Fiji was stable and said it was reckless for the Australian army to draw up plans for a non-existent situation.

Only last week the Fijian government had expelled New Zealand's High Commissioner Michael Green for allegedly interfering in the domestic affairs of the country.
