Hyderabad : In an attempt to avoid any public attention, Pakistan cricket team captain Shoaib Malik fielded for only a couple of overs during the Indian Premier League (IPL) match here even as the parents of his ‘wife’ have threatened to expose him for ‘cheating’ them.
Malik, now a member of Delhi Daredevils team, took to the field against hosts Deccan Chargers Tuesday.
Hyderabad-based M.A. Siddiqui has claimed that Malik married his daughter Ayesha over the Internet but Malik has said that Siddiqui was making false claims.
During the match, Malik was on the field for only three overs, saving a few runs for his team and later returned to the dressing room. During that brief play, he preferred to field near the wickets and did not even bowl.
The Pakistani all-rounder, who declined to make any comments on his marriage row, left along with his team Wednesday.
Ayesha’s family, which demanded that Malik be banned from playing in India, made no attempt to confront him at the hotel or at the stadium.
Siddiqui could not be contacted but a source close to family said he was determined to “expose” Malik by making public the “concrete evidence” of his daughter’s marriage with Malik.
The source said the evidence includes videotapes of Malik’s interviews during Pakistan team’s tour to India in 2005. Malik had stated that he married a girl from Hyderabad. “Malik will be exposed before he leaves India,” source told IANS.
Malik claimed in January that he has sent two legal notices to Siddiqui’s family, asking it to withdraw their “false” claim about the marriage.
According to the family, during 2005 tour Malik revealed about his marriage with Ayesha. He visited this city to play a match against India ‘A’ and during its stay the Pakistani team attended a reception Siddiqui hosted at his residence here.
Malik and Ayesha had met at a hotel in Sharjah in 2002 and married over the Internet the same year, the family has claimed.
