U.S. admits more Iraqi refugees in July

Washington : The United States admitted more than 2,300 Iraqi refugees into the country last month and this has been the highest in recent months, the State Department said Friday.

According to the State Department, 2,352 Iraqi refugees were allowed in the United States in July, as 1,721 Iraqi refugees arrived in June.

Altogether, the United States has admitted 8,815 Iraqi refugees to the United States in the budget year that will end on Sept. 30.The United States plans to take in a total of 12,000 Iraqi refugees this budget year.

The United States has been under criticism for taking too few Iraqi refugees. It is reported that the United States only took in202 Iraqi refugees last year.

The UNHCR estimates that up to 2 million Iraqis have moved to neighboring countries, mainly Syria and Jordan, before and since the 2003 Iraq war and 1.7 million Iraqis are internally displaced because of the rising sectarian violence.
