Wipro starts operations in Poland

By Surender Bhutani, IANS, Warsaw : Indian IT giant Wipro has started its operations in Poland from the city of Wroclaw, close to the German border, officials said. The Bangalore-based IT company, which had a turnover of $5 billion in 2007, has employed more than 200 technicians to expand its business not only in Poland but all of Europe. The operations will be carried out in both English and German. Poland is one of the favourite destinations of Indian IT companies. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Zanser have already made inroads into the European country.

Uttar Pradesh approves Rs.12 bn water supply project

By IANS, Agra : The Uttar Pradesh government has approved a Rs.12 billion Gangajal pipeline project for Agra, Mathura and Vrindavan, providing some hope of relief for the parched areas. The project envisages the laying of a 130 km pipeline from Palra headworks in Bulandshahr's Upper Ganga canal to the Sikandra Water Works in Agra, via Mathura and Vrindavan. A new bridge on river Yamuna is being constructed near Runukta to enable the pipeline cross over to Mathura district.

GTC Industries changes name to Golden Tobacco

Diamond Fabcare to open 100 Wardrobe outlets

HDFC net profit rises to Rs.5.29 bn

By IANS, Mumbai : HDFC Bank Thursday announced a net profit of Rs.5.29 billion for the second quarter of fiscal 2008-09 against Rs.3.68 billion in the same period last year. The total income increased to Rs.46.34 billion during the July-September period from Rs.28.45 billion of the year-ago period. "The results for the quarter were not comparable with that of the corresponding period last year as the bank had merged with Centurion Bank of Punjab," a bank statement said. Shares of HDFC Bank closed at Rs.1,087.35, down by 4.15 percent on the Bombay Stock Exchange.

Electrotherm India bags Turkish order for furnaces

Sensex still in the red, down 106 points

A key index was ruling 106 points below its last closing figure after opening about 245 points lower. The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which had opened at 11,774.04 points, was ruling at 11,913.45 points, still 106.2 points or 0.88 percent lower than its previous close. Similarly, the S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) was ruling at 3,623 points, 0.34 percent lower than its last close.

EIL pays highest so far dividend

Infiniti to open 20 Croma retail stores next fiscal

By IANS, Hyderabad : Infiniti Retail Ltd, a 100 percent subsidiary of Tata Sons, plans to open 20 Croma stores with an investment of Rs.600-800 million (Rs.60-80 crore) in 2009-10, a top official said Thursday. "The opening of 20 Croma stores by March 2010 will take the total number of stores across the country to 50," Infiniti Retail chief executive and managing director Ajit Joshi told reporters after opening two Croma stores here. Tata Sons has invested Rs.2.2 billion in this multi-brand durables and electronics chain.

Bharti, Wal-Mart open first joint store in India

By IANS, Amritsar : India's Bharti group and Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, opened their first cash-and-carry joint venture store here Saturday on an investment of $7 million, and are planning to open at least 15 stores in the next three years. The stores will be run under the brand name of Best Price Modern Wholesale.

Funds for minority welfare up by 74 percent

By IANS, New Delhi : The budget has increased the outlay for the minority affairs ministry from Rs.1,000 crore last fiscal to Rs.1,740 crore with a focus on educational schemes. The funds have been hiked to implement projects for the welfare of the minorities, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee announced while presenting the union budget Monday. "The plan outlay for the Ministry of Minority Affairs has been enhanced from Rs.1,000 crore in 2008-09 to Rs.1,740 crore for 2009-10, registering an increase of 74 percent," he said.

‘Satyam scam has scared small investors off stock markets’

Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland promise early supply of buses

By IANS, New Delhi: The Delhi High Court Tuesday got an assurance from Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland that they will quickly supply low-floor buses as sought by the Delhi government. A division bench of Justices Vikramjit Sen and Manmohan Singh asked Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland to file a detailed affidavit as to when they will be able to provide the buses to the government so that phasing out of the Blueline buses, dubbed "killer buses" by the public, can be done at the earliest.
