Eva Air third airline to suspend Indian operations

By DPA, Hong Kong : Hong Kong's leading bank, HSBC Holdings, Thursday was offering interest rates so low that customers would need to save $250,000 for a year to earn enough interest to buy a cup of coffee. A record low interest rate of 0.001 percent was being offered by HSBC, which has 4.2 million customers in the city of seven million, because of what it described as rock-bottom interbank rates. The rate meant that a saver would need to deposit two million Hong Kong dollars ($258,000) for a year to get enough interest to buy a cup of coffee costing 20 Hong Kong dollars.

City-based Electrotherm (India) Ltd has inked a memorandum of understanding with Canadian firm Electrovaya to form a joint venture for this purpose. The joint venture (JV) will set up an advanced Lithium super polymer battery plant with a capacity of up to 10 MW hours a month. The batteries will be sold in the zero-emission electric vehicle market in India and overseas.

DSCL to double chlor-alkali plant capacity

Broadband auction winners to pay up license fee by June 22

By IANS, New Delhi : The government Saturday formally approved results of the broadband wireless access (BWA) auction and said the winners need to pay up the license fee by June 22. "The results were considered and approved by the committee headed by the cabinet secretary. Winning bidders, including MTNL and BSNL, are required to pay the amount by June 22, 2010," said a telecom ministry statement. The auction for BWA spectrum ended Friday, swelling the government coffer by Rs.38,543.31 crore (over $8.56 billion).

By Xinhua Yangon : Myanmar and India are in the process of finalising a river transportation project mooted during former Indian president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's state visit in March last year, local media reported Tuesday. The Kaladam multi-modal river transportation project, which also involves the building of the Paletwa border road, will involve India extending a US $10 million line of credit. The Kaladam project will cover upgrading of waterways along the Kaladam River and Sittway port in Western Myanmar's Rakhine state, the Flower News said.

By IANS, Chennai : A case of cheating has been registered Saturday against Shiv Kumar, the promoter of software company Vispro, for allegedly cheating software professionals to the tune of Rs.800 million ($20 million), the police said. According to the police, Kumar promised jobs to more than 1,000 candidates who paid between Rs.35,000 and Rs.200,000 per head for learning software skills and eventually getting employment. He then disappeared with the money even without paying salaries to the employees of the company for the last three months.

Birla is survived by three daughters - Nandini Nopany, Saroj Poddar and vice chairperson and editorial adviser of Hindustan Times Shobhana Bhartia. His wife Manorama Devi Birla had died about a month ago. A spokesman said that Birla, "the chairman of the Hindustan Times, and the Rs.10,000 crore Zuari-Chambal Group passed away at about 7.30 a.m".

LIC launches health insurance scheme

Inaugurating the scheme called LIC's Health Plus here, LIC's western region zonal manager R.R. Rai said: "Under this plan, health insurance will cover the entire family - husband, wife and children, hospital cash benefits, and major surgical benefits." Rai said that LIC intends to target at least one million policy buyers across the country during the first phase of the launch.

Reliance Energy buys back 650,000 shares

By IANS Mumbai : The Anil Ambani promoted Reliance Energy has bought back 650,000 equity shares of the company since the start of the offer Tuesday at nearly Rs.1,279.23 a share aggregating Rs.831.5 million ($21 million). The company's board had approved buy-back of equity shares up to Rs.8 billion ($200 million), amounting to 10 percent of the company`s equity and free reserves. By IANS, Chandigarh : The holiest of Sikh shrines 'Harmandar Sahib' (Golden Temple) in Amritsar has been given value added tax (VAT) exemption by the Punjab government Wednesday. At its meeting here Wednesday, the Punjab cabinet decided to exempt VAT on all raw materials and consumables procured by or sold to the Sikh shrine. The state government also lowered the VAT rate for energy efficient Compact Flourescent Lamps (CFLs) from 12.5 to 4 percent to encourage people to buy these.

Jayant Bhuyan, chief executive of India Brand Equity Foundation, dead

An alumnus of St. Stephens College in Delhi University, Bhuyan died following a cardiac surgery in the capital, said a statement issued by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), of which he was deputy director general. NLC plans to mine 2.1 million tonnes of lignite annually at Barsingsar, where it is also setting up a 250-MW power project. "The initial capital expenditure estimate for the mine was Rs.5.51 billion. When the decision to outsource the mining activity was taken, this came down to Rs.2.54 billion," B. Surender Mohan, NLC's director (Mines), told IANS.

Brakes India to expand Oman foundry facility

By IANS, Chennai : Brakes India Ltd, a leading manufacturer of braking systems and ductile castings, will invest $16 million to expand the production capacity of its foundry facility in Oman, a top official said. "We intend to double the capacity to 36,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) at an outlay of $16 million to be funded with a mix of debt and internal accruals," Brakes India executive director V. Narasimhan told IANS. According to him, the expansion is warranted as the plant that started commercial production this April is already working at 70 percent capacity.

Gujarat’s Samana set to become wind power hub

Haryana to refund stamp duty of notified SEZs

Rane group completes restructuring process

By IANS Chennai : City-based auto component manufacturers Rane group has completed its restructuring process in the wake of the approval given by the Madras High Court for a rejig scheme. The court sanctioned the scheme of de-merger, merger and amalgamation among the three group companies - Rane Engine Valves Ltd (REVL), Rane Brake Linings Ltd (RBLL) and Rane Holdings Ltd (RHL).

Brandhouse to bring four new global brands to India

By IANS New Delhi : Brandhouse Retails, the retail arm of apparel firm S. Kumar's Nationwide Ltd (SKNL), which already retails international luxury brands such as Alfred Dunhill and Escada in India, is planning to launch four new international brands by April this year. This is part of its expansion, for which the company has invested around Rs.4 billion ($100 million).
