Beaconing a misdirected community: A clarion call from a 23 year old Muslim youth

Mussadiq Ameen opens up his heart to the global Muslim Community. Soon after my birth, I became too busy carrying the burdens that the world loaded on me. The first burden was my studies, which I relinquished in the middle of my college days. I did realize that the scholastic education cannot take me any where if I lacked perspiration and self-effort. I was not ready to carry empty bowls in the form of degrees to beg for alms from some employees. Hardly could I find any guidance to develop me – neither my parents were capable of guiding me nor the world could stop for a while to tell me how to proceed. Therefore, I wanted to make myself. Yes! Today, I do not put any academic qualifications beside my name, but I have learnt how to be loyal to my creator (Allah); I know what is good and bad; I know how to be kind and compassionate; I know I should never follow the ways of wrong doers; I have learnt how to be a self-employed and do successful business. Thus, I begin my journey all alone – but I know the ever compassionate Lord is with me all the time guiding me from within.

LS elections: who will have the last laugh in Kerala’s Muslim politics?

By Muhammed Noushad When the Lok Sabha results come on May 16, who will have the last laugh in Kerala’s Muslim politics? Highly unpredictable. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has been desperately trying to make inroads into Muslim politics for many years, by using different tactics from organising a hugely impressive State Conference at Malappuram (the district where almost 80% of the population are Muslims) and systematically adopting religious Muslims into the party inner circles and playing apparently pro-Muslim games.

Historians and historiographers are expected to study and narrate an event objectively and without showing loyalty to any affiliation – regional, communal or philosophical. Demystifying Varanasi

By Vidya Bhushan Rawat Varanasi is rising on the high voltage publicity after Hindutva’s mascot Narendra Modi decided to contest from this place. The supporters of the party and the caste based Indian middle classes all jumped with joy after hearing this decision. People are thinking as if Varanasi would now be converted into Rome or Athens which are historical and of immense religious value. Thousands of pilgrims from different parts of the world actually visit Varanasi every year to the ‘beauty’ of Kashi. The city remains one of the dirtiest in the country to say the least. The ghats and the gullies are enough to give you food poisoning like any other religious places of India, full of dirt and filth. The only good thing is ‘’invisible’ is the spirited people and their abundant faith on the ‘power’. Despite dirt and filth, they are ready to jump into the river to wash their sins.

On the Meanings of the Hijab

By Sana Khan, More than three years ago I wrote an article titled ‘burqa-to wear or not to wear’. A friend said that she supported the view of the French government banning the burqa as it truly was doing it to respect the principle of secularity in school and well of course it would liberate women, and in this light I wrote this article. That time I was arguing that the wearing or not wearing of a burqa/hijab is an individual choice about attire. Just as the other women exercise their opinion to dress in the manner they want, without any hue and cry, a woman in burqa/hijab should have the right to dress in the way she wants to. I am sharing here some excerpts from that article which I think are significant only to place the discussion around hijab in a more lucid way as it explains my position on hijab.

Civility against Caste: Dalit Politics and Citizenship in Western India

Title: Civility against Caste: Dalit Politics and Citizenship in Western India Author: Prof. Suryakant Waghmore Publisher: Sage India Year: January, 2014 Review by: Yogesh Maitreya for TwoCircles.net, Civility is the least discussed discourse in India. In post-constitutional Indian society, the idea of civility has formed a binary: on one hand, ‘civil society’ that has been propagated by media and resources which are dominated and owned by Brahmin-Bania associations and on the other hand, the civility which has been practice by NGOs and political organisations led by Dalits. The latter had started with the core motive of annihilation of caste and, found its genesis in the struggles of Mahatma Fule and Dr. B.R.Ambedkar in Maharashtra. The idea of civility, practiced by Dalit NGOs and political groups, is contrary to the idea of civility which Brahmin-Bania possess and propagate in India, simply because idea of civility practiced by Dalits aims at annihilation of caste; precisely, Dalit civility is the ‘Civility against Caste’.

Siddiqullah Chaudhry: A man with a mission

By Manzar Bilal, TwoCircles.net, In first week of February I was in Kolkata to attend the 3-day vehicle rally jointly organized by West Bengal unit of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind (JUH) and Public Democratic Conference of India (PDCI) to campaign for reservation for Muslims. This rally was backed by several social, religious and political parties.

Raver communal riot: A sequence of events

By Abdur Rauf Sheikh,

Date: 13th April 2008. Time: Evening; people are gathering for Maghrib prayer at a mosque in Kotwal locality in Raver (Jalgaon). Timing may be a coincident or planned. A Ramnavmi procession goes past the mosque. Silently? No. The processionists raise volume of their audio system which plays slogans like 'mandir wahin banayenge' (we will build the temple there). Then they throw gulal (colours) incessantly and deliberately towards the mosque. This all culminated into what is everybody's guess. A communal riot.

December 6, 1992: How do Muslims in India recall the day?

By Abdul Hameed and Md. Ali, TwoCircles.net, It was an unfortunate day for India when Babri Masjid in Ayodhya was demolished by the Hindu criminal elements. The mosque that had existed for hundreds of years could not be seen in the evening of December 6, 1992. It was destroyed by 150,000 Hindutva extremists despite a commitment to the Indian Supreme Court that the mosque would not be harmed. The demolition was followed by communal riots that erupted around the country with Mumbai being most affected by them. Many Muslims were slain and their families were destroyed.

Warning signs for AIUDF

By Kashif-ul-Huda, TwoCircles.net Assam United Democratic Front made history in 2006 by winning 10 seats in Assam Assembly election. Cashing in on the success, it had launched branches in at least five other states and now calls itself All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). The first serious set back for the three year old party came when it lost the recent by-election to one of the seat previously held by its president. This is a warning sign for the party and what it represents.

Muslims in India: How long will they remain marginalized?

By Shamim Akhter, Two days back I went through a report in BBC website under the title “India state-run banks ‘turn away Muslims’” regarding denial of access to government banks to Muslims in India. The report reveals the truth of the government banks operating in different parts of the country. The report quotes the National Commission of Minorities as saying that there has been a 100% increase in the number of complaints it has received over the past year from Muslims who say they are being prevented from opening accounts in state-run banks.
