Addressing a press conference at the end of the economic meet, Wu said the dialogue was “of strategic meaning, mutually beneficial and is bound to exert important influence on future business and trade ties between China and the US”.

He said that agreements were reached on food safety, environment, energy and investment.

US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, who co-chaired the talks with Wu, described the discussions as “instructive and constructive”.

“The quality of our discussions has improved over the last year, as we have come to know one another better,” he added.

Paulson said both sides had “substantive, robust, and engaging exchanges on a range of issues important to both nations” including the integrity of trade, balanced growth, financial services, energy security and environmental sustainability, and bilateral investment.

A joint fact sheet released after the talks said that the discussions led to strengthening and deepening of bilateral economic relations.

The fourth SED is scheduled to convene in Washington in June next year.
