Islamabad : Former Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif Monday demanded transfer of power to the new government to be formed by majority parties.
Speaking at a press conference here, Sharif called for convening the National Assembly session to elect the prime minister. He also demanded resignation of President Pervez Musharraf.
Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) party secured 67 National Assembly seats and emerged the second largest party next to the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), which won 87 National Assembly seats in the general elections held Feb 18.
Both parties have agreed to form a coalition government.
The PML-N leader said his party wanted restoration of judiciary and did not accept the measures taken by Musharraf on the day he proclaimed emergency Nov 3.
“Our first step in the National Assembly would be to restore judiciary. The judiciary will decide if a man in army uniform is competent to contest presidential elections,” he said.
Sharif said that members-elect from the PPP, PML-N and the Awami National Party (ANP) as well as well as independent members would converge on Islamabad Feb 27 to show their strength.
Musharraf sacked the Supreme Court chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and around 60 senior judges who refused to take oath under the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO).
