Ahmedabad : A day after eight low-intensity bomb blasts rocked Bangalore, the western Indian city of Ahmedabad was rattled by an equal number of coordinated bomb blasts in which at least two people are feared killed while several more were injured, officials and eyewitnesses said.
Twenty to 30 people have been admitted to various hospitals, officials said.
The bombs, most of them of low-intensity, were planted on bicycles or in lunch boxes, the officials added.
The first blast occurred in the Maninagar area – Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency – at 6.45 p.m., followed by seven more in a span of about 15 minutes in the state’s principal city and a major centre for commerce.
The second blast occurred at Thakkar Bapanagar, the third near the Sarangpur Bridge, while the fourth went off at Isanpur. Blasts were also reported from the Narol, Sarkhej, Odhav and Bapunagar neighbourhoods.
All these areas are in the eastern part of the city, and many of them have a large population of migrant labour from other parts of the state.
Residents in the affected areas, though shocked, soon joined the rescue efforts, and the injured were rushed to the Civil Hospital.
According to Minister of State for Home Sri Prakash Jaiswal, “the blasts seem to be on the lines of yesterday’s Bangalore blasts. It is a conspiracy to unsettle the country. All metros are on a high alert.”
