The two parties announced the exchange three weeks ago, and the mediation was made by Turkish authorities.

Mark Regev, a spokesman for Israel’s Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, said that the Israeli government would keep its position to continue the conversations.

Two Israeli officials, Shalom Turgemen and Yoram Turbowitz, will go to Turkey next week for conversations with Syrian representatives.

The center of the bilateral discussions will probably be the return of the Heights of Golan, which is a key topic to open a peace process.

The position of the Heights of Golan, which is strategic for both countries, was taken by the Israeli Army in June 1967, and its annexation was voted at the Israeli Parliament (Knesset) in 1981.

Nevertheless, no one accepted to get deeper on the topics to be debated in the negotiations after eight years of interruption.

The possible results of the conversations with Damascus are submitted to what happens with Ehud Olmert, who can conclude his mandate abruptly because of the opening of a judicial process for corruption.
