Shortly after the royal flag was lowered in front of a large crowd amid exclamations and cheers, the national flag was hoisted.

In line with the proclamation of the republic Wednesday night, King Gyanendra has 15 days to leave the palace, which will be turned into a museum as ordered by the government.

Nepal’s 601 member Constituent Assembly almost unanimously declared the Himalayan nation a federal, independent, indivisible, secular, inclusive and democratic republic.

Only the four representatives of the Rastriya Prajantantra pro-monarchical party voted against the project, drawn up by the main parties.

In a second session, the Constituent Assembly will pass a separate bill to amend the Interim Constitution, and create the position of president as chief of State.
