Chandresh Maraskole, a student of Gandhi Medical College (GMC), had an affair with the girl identified as Ruchi, a native of Pachmarhi. She had reportedly left her home and was living with the accused in his hostel for the past few days.

“The girl was reportedly forcing him to marry her. They had an altercation over the issue on Sep 18 (Thursday), following which he strangled her to death,” a police official said.

The body remained in his room the whole of Friday, rolled up in a mattress. On Saturday, the 28-year-old asked his doctor friend Hemant Verma to lend his car and driver to go to Hoshangabad. But on the way, he stopped the car at Pachmarhi, a hill station about 200 km from here, and dumped Ruchi’s body that was still rolled up in the mattress.

“Chandresh, a native of Balaghat, took the doctor’s car to go to Hoshangabad for some personal work. But after reaching Hoshangabad, he asked the driver to take him to Pachmarhi. On the way, he asked him to stop and get water. He then threw the mattress down the valley,” the police official alleged.

The driver became suspicious when he noticed that the mattress was missing from the car, but he drove Chandresh back to Bhopal.

The incident came to light when the driver informed Verma, the car owner, who in turn called the police Sunday.

Chandresh was arrested later Sunday and he reportedly confessed his crime, the official added.

Police, however, said “they would not be able to say anything until the body was recovered”.

A police team has left for Pachmarhi Monday along with Chandresh to recover the body, the official said.
