“At present, there is no proposal to ban the use of artificial sweeteners,” Minister of Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad told the Lok Sabha in a written reply.

He said the government has so far not received any report that artificial sweeteners were causing health hazards.

The government has approved the use of three types of artificial sweeteners — saccharin sodium, aspertame and neotame.

The highest amount of artificial sweetener allowed is aspertame, which has a limit of 10,000 parts per million in sugared or sugar- free confectionery as well as in chewing gum.
