Thiruvananthapuram : The Congress Friday demanded immediate stop violence against its members by Kerala’s ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), unleashed after the April 13 state assembly polls.
State Congress president Ramesh Chennithala, in a statement issued here, also blamed police for remaining mute spectators and taking no action against the assailants.
“The state government should immediately direct police to take action in the violence that took place at Kakodiyil and Elathur, both in Kozhikode district, where our party men and office were attacked by CPI-M activists,” he said.
On polling day, CPI-M activists in Kakodiyil allegedly poured cow dung on a Congress activist.
Kozhikode MP and and Congress leader M.K.Raghavan said the CPI-M has realised that it is losing the election and was hence venting its anger on Congress workers.
Meanwhile, in Haripad constituency (Alappuzha district) from where Chennithala contested, urine was thrown on Congress worker Sethulekhshmi after she protested attack on a party colleague by CPI-M workers.
The Congress workers in Haripad held a protest meeting Thursday and afterwards police registered a case against Haripad village council president P.N. Chandran, his son and 13 others.
Over 75 percent voting was recorded in the polling for the 140-member Kerala assembly Wednesday. Results will be declared May 13.
