Firozabad (Uttar Pradesh) : Thousands of police job aspirants here Monday turned violent, damaging vehicles and public property and fought pitched battles with the police after they were told to come after a few days to collect application forms.
Around 3,000 youths had queued up at the General Post Office (GPO) to buy forms for the constable level recruitment in Uttar Pradesh Police. When told to come after a few days, they got angry and resorted to vandlism.
“Youths resorted to large-scale violence and vandalism when they came to know about the unavailability of recruitment forms. They damaged as many as 10 public vehicles and even tried to set some of them afire,” police inspector Harishankar Chandra told reporters in Firozabad, some 300 km from Lucknow.
Police had to baton charge the unruly youths when they refused to leave the GPO complex and continued to target public property.
“The aspirants also indulged in heavy brick-batting when we tried to intervene in the matter. As they turned unruly, we had no option other than to use force. However, no one was seriously injured in the incident,” said Chandra.
“The situation is still tense. Security has been strengthened in the area,” he added.
