Achieved broad umbrella agreement with Dhaka: PM

On board Air India One: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday said that India has achieved a “broad umbrella agreement” with Bangladesh that would serve as the pathway for the future.

“We have achieved a broad umbrella agreement..setting up a pathway,” he told reporters on board his special aircraft on his way back home after a two-day visit to Dhaka, adding that he was very satisfied with the visit.

He hoped that with the demarcation of the India-Bangladesh boundary, “the unfortunate incidents like illegal movement will be things of the past”.

Manmohan Singh recalled that he had gone to Dhaka soon after the 1971 liberation war to work out a programme of economic cooperation. He said short, medium and long-term programmes had been worked out and many elements of these were still valid.

To a query on his talks with Bangladesh opposition leader Khaleda Zia, known for her anti-India stance, he said: “It seems they would like to work with us.”
