Shillong : Four days of revelry and merriment ended Monday as idols of goddess Durga and her four children were immersed in rivers across Meghalaya.
The banks of the Umkhrah and other rivers wore a festive look as organisers came in colourful processions to the accompaniment of drums to immerse the idols.
Hundreds of devotees gently lowered the idols into the rivers.
“The immersion ceremony symbolises the end of the goddess’s annual sojourn to her paternal home and she returns to her husband Lord Shiva in Mount Kailash,” said a devotee.
The event passed off peacefully under the watchful eyes of the district administration after unknown assailants hurled petrol bombs at a Puja pandal at Umsning area in Ri-Bhoi district on the first day of the celebrations.
“The entire puja celebration passed off peacefully amidst strict vigil,” said Mariahom Kharkrang, the district police chief of East Khasi Hills.
