Ramallah : A Hamas lawmaker on Tuesday said he and some Hamas officials discussed with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas the issue of Palestinian prisoners and the problems between Hamas and Abbas’ Fatah movement.
Hamed al-Bittawi, the Hamas lawmaker, said a group of former Hamas ministers and lawmakers attended the meeting at Abbas’ office in Ramallah on Monday evening.
The meeting was mainly held to “hand over a letter from the prisoners to Abbas,” al-Bittawi said, adding the letter also addresses the division between Hamas and Fatah. The message urged Abbas to resolve the division between the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip and the Fatah-dominated West Bank, according to the lawmaker.
It was one of the rare meetings held between Hamas officials based in the West Bank and President Abbas. Since Hamas violently ousted Palestinian security force loyal to Abbas from the GazaStrip last June, Abbas banned any contact with Hamas.
