Beijing : The seismic aftershocks following May 12 earthquake that devastated the Chinese province of Sichuan are likely to continue for two or three months, said an expert on seismology of the Asian nation Tuesday.
Former deputy director of China Seismological Bureau (CSB) and a seismologist He Yongnian said that an 8.0 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale will for sure cause many aftershocks to extend for a long time.
“A strong earthquake, especially above 8.0-magnitude, will surely have aftershocks and they may go on for months,” said He. The frequency and magnitude of the aftershocks tended to grow weaker as time passed, though they could fluctuate, the expert said in an online interview on Xinhuanet.com.
The north part of Sichuan have experienced thousands of small tremors, but 182 of the aftershocks registered by the Seismological Service measured above magnitude four and five of them measured six on the Richter scale.
Five aftershocks measuring above magnitude six were monitored and the most recent at magnitude 6.4 on Sunday afternoon killed at least eight people, left a thousand of wounded people and 270,000 homes destroyed or damaged.
The total number of dead people reported on Monday was 65,080, whereas other 23,000 continued reported as missing, while millions of tons of rubble remain in cities and towns of the region.
