BJP to pick parliamentary poll candidates this month

New Delhi : The Election Commission has indicated that the next parliamentary poll will not be held before April, perhaps in May, but the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Friday decided to pick its candidates before the end of this month.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the party's parliamentary board.
Sources disclosed that it was at the behest of BJP's prime ministerial hopeful L.K. Advani that the candidates would be finalised so early. He had earlier made this point during the party's core committee meeting in Shimla Monday.

"I am deeply grieved at the death of one of the pioneers of the Communist movement in India and my friend. As the chief minister of West Bengal for several years, he strived hard for the state's development," Karunanidhi said in his condolence message.
In her message, AIADMK general secretary J. Jayalalithaa said: "The passing away of 95-year-old Jyoti Basu has created a deep void in the Communist movement.

New Delhi : The results of the Uttar Pradesh byelections have shown the plummeting electoral graph of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the country's most populous state.
The BJP's showing in the April 16 poll was dismal with the exception of the Azamgarh Lok Sabha constituency where it ended the runner up. The winner there was Akbar Ahmad Dumpy of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which swept the byelections.
The BSP won all five byelections, the results of which were declared Wednesday. It won two Lok Sabha and three assembly seats.

Hyderabad: The Election Commission has received an application for registration of a new political party 'YSR Praja Party', named after former chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who was popularly known as YSR.
The poll panel, in a statement Friday, said one S. Venkataramana Reddy of Kadapa district submitted an application July 5. It could not be confirmed if Venkataramana is a follower of YSR's son Jaganmohan Reddy or had filed the application at his behest.

Ahmedabad : A day after its humiliating defeat in the Gujarat assembly polls, the Congress Monday was in self-introspection mode, admitting to mistakes rather than playing a blame game.
"I take full responsibility for the defeat," said Bharatsinh Solanki, the state unit president who was in charge of the election campaign.
"We have not been able to connect with the electorate effectively," Solanki told IANS Monday.

New Delhi : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Saturday alleged that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had "damaged the institution of the PM" for saying that the case relating to Ottavio Quattrocchi was an "embarrassment" to the Indian government.
BJP general secretary Arun Jaitley told the CNN-IBN television channel that the "case was damaged by the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) under this government".
Manmohan Singh had "damaged the institution of the PM", he charged.
Jaitley was responding to remarks the prime minister made in his interview to the channel.

Mohali (Punjab): A high-level inquiry has been initiated into the visit by an imposter pretending to be an adviser of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here July 11 and based on the findings, a case will be registered against him, police said Saturday.
The Mohali Police had provided VIP security, including a pilot and escort jeeps, to take the man who called himself by the same name as the prime minister around the district.
However, later he was arrested in Jammu and Kashmir by the police there for posing as an adviser to the prime minister.
Raman Singh backs minister under fire from Congress

Raipur : Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh Friday strongly rejected the charges levelled by the opposition Congress against a senior minister in his government for alleged links with a person held for smuggling arms to Maoists.
Singh rejected the Congress demand that he sack Agriculture Minister Chandrasekhar Sahu immediately and order a probe into the matter.
"It is a purely political matter. The charges levelled by the Congress are politically motivated," he told reporters.
