India: Rahúl Ghandi Possible Next Premier

New Delhi : The idea that India’s Congress Party postulates its young Secretary General Rahul Ghandi as a candidate for Prime Minister in the 2009 general elections received the support of Indian Foreign Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee Tuesday.

“Leadership always rests on young people. That’s a universal truth,” Pranab Mukherjee said.

Mukherjee is one of the most experienced parliamentarians in India and one of the main ministers in the cabinet of Rahúl Ghandi’s grandmother Indira Ghandi when she was murdered.

Mukherjee expressed his opinion when journalists asked him about the comment made by Development Minister Arjun Singh favourable to Rahul Ghandi’s nomination.

Rahul Ghandi will be 28 years old on June 19, a member of the Nehru-Ghandi political clan and son of Rajiv and Sonia Ghandi.

He was 14 years old when his grandmother Indira was murdered, and 21 when his father Rajiv was the victim of a suicide attack. His great-grandfather Jawarharlal Nehru became the first Prime Minister of India after the nation got its independence from London.

His great-great-grandfather Motil Nehru was one of the relevant personalities together with Mahatma Ghandi in the independence struggle against the UK

Rahul Ghandi came to India´s political life by winning a seat for deputy in the 2004 general elections. He based his campaign on joining and unifying the country, condemned division and advocated for reducing racial differences and religious tensions.

He was appointed one of the leaders of the All India Congress´ Committee on September 24, 2004, and got the chance and responsibility to lead the Youth Congress and the National Students Union of India.

He has been making an intense campaign looking for support for the Congress Party, for upcoming parliamentary elections in several Indian states.
