By NNN-KUNA Washington : The reconciliation agreement signed by the top five political leaders in Iraq on Sunday was a welcome development and "a good step forward," State Department deputy spokesman Tom Casey said. The deal calls for the release of thousands of Iraqi prisoners being held without charge, as well as a revision of the Iraqi de-Baathification law that has kept thousands of members of the political party of ex-Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein out of government jobs. An intense gun battle is on between the militants and the security forces. According to the police, militants shot dead Hoshiar Singh and his wife Shashi Bala of Kali Mandi in Samba, 45 km from here. Police and army units, alerted by the gun shots, ran towards the area and engaged the militants in a gun battle in which four people, including a photojournalist, were injured. The militants are said to be hiding in a house.

17 Kashmiris cross LoC illegally to return home

New Delhi: The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) will soon turn into a full-fledged statutory body.

In order to ensure NCM a constitutional status, a bill will be placed in Parliament for discussion during the next session starting from 25th February. According to sources in the Ministry of Minority Affairs and NCM, the bill is being given final shape.
