According to police, the deceased, Gurcharan Singh, was a resident of Harion village in Sangrur district, some 70 km from the state capital Chandigarh. "Gurcharan was watering the crops in his fields when he was attacked by his neighbour Janjeer Singh and his three sons. When he retaliated, Janjeer brought out a gun and started firing. By Syed Zarir Hussain, IANS Guwahati : It was sheer callousness on the part of the Assam police that led to the killing of kidnapped Food Corporation of India (FCI) executive director Phul Chand Ram, caught in a crossfire between security forces and militants of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA). Ram was killed in a gunfight early Thursday at village Borkapanitema, about 50 km west of Guwahati, while police tried to rescue him from the clutches of ULFA who abducted him from here April 17.

Bangladesh prepares for cyclone, security forces on alert

By IANS Dhaka : Bangladesh alerted its security forces along the Bay of Bengal coast and warned fishermen not to venture out to the sea as cyclone Sidr closed in Thursday. The meteorological office here said the cyclone was likely to cross the Khulna-Barisal coastline by noon Thursday, the New Age newspaper reported. The sustained wind speed within 74 km of the storm centre is about 190 kmph, rising to 210 kmph in gusts and squalls, a special bulletin of the Storm Warning Centre here said.
