Gandhinagar: The Gujarat High court Tuesday warned the state government of contempt proceedings if it fails to clarify within a week whether it intends to pay compensation to a petitioner who suffered losses during the post-Godhra riots in 2002.
The court order dated Dec 23, 2009, had allowed time till Jan 20, 2010, to the state government to pay the compensation after its counsel sought time to obtain instructions from the government.

Bhopal: A court here Tuesday granted regular bail to five convicts in the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy, the world's worst industrial disaster.
Chief Judicial Magistrate R.V. Singh gave the reprieve to the convicts, who included 85-year-old Keshub Mahindra, the then head of the Union Carbide India Ltd (UCIL).
Tonnes of lethal gas leaked from UCIL's pesticide plant on the night of Dec 2-3, 1984, killing and maiming thousands.

Maoists blast CRPF vehicle, seven killed

Raipur: Seven Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers were killed Saturday when Maoist guerrillas blew up their vehicle in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, a month after the rebels slaughtered 76 security personnel in the same region.
"The Maoists blew up a bullet-proof vehicle in the Koretal forested stretch with a landmine. At least seven CRPF men were killed," Director General of Police Vishwa Ranjan told IANS. A CRPF trooper was injured.
Two civilians who were on a motorcycle in the vicinity when the landmine exploded with a deafening roar were also injured.

Kandahar (Afghanistan) : A series of five explosions and gunfire killed at least 35 people, including police forces in southern city of Kandahar, an interior ministry spokesman said Sunday.
The Taliban called the attacks a reaction to the NATO commander's warning about an imminent military offensive in the region.

The incident occurred Wednesday in Satpada Sarai village. Nidhi while returning from school saw three girls - two of Class 7 and one of Class 9 - beating a girl studying in the same school.
"When she intervened, she drew the ire of her schoolmates," a police official said.

New Delhi : Six men have been arrested here for duping state-owned Syndicate Bank of Rs.9 million by stealing and forging bank drafts, police said Wednesday.
According to police, the scam started a man named Lalit Kumar stealing a booklet containing 50 blank bank drafts from the Dwarka branch of the bank in February.
Kumar, who used to work as electrician in the bank, sold the booklet to his friend Harjit Singh for Rs.500 per draft. Singh, in turn, sold them to Raj Kumar Gupta for Rs.1,000 each.
