It is generally thought that movement for women’s rights began with western educated people and in 19th century. But very few people know about Maulavi Mumtaz Ali Khan, a traditional ‘alim, product of Darul ‘Uloom Deoband who was very enthusiastic supporters of gender equality. There are two things to be noted here: one, he was a traditional ‘alim and was not under the influence of western thought and two, he was advocating gender equality purely on the basis of Islamic traditional sources i.e. Qur’an and hadith.

Agra, May 1 (IANS) Determined to clean up the Yamuna, authorities in the Taj Mahal city have arrested 23 cattle owners and washermen for dirtying the river. The surprise and swift operation - involving the joint staff of five police stations - made the arrests Saturday under various sections of the Water Pollution Act of 1974. Police said the arrested people - 18 'dhobis' (washermen) and five cattle owners - could be fined and sentenced up to seven years in jail.

Muslims from the west started entering Assam in 1206 few years before the invasion of the Ahoms into the state in 1226. The only difference between the two is that the Ahoms could lay down permanent empire but Muslims failed to establish their rule prosperously. Muslims yet, could conquer some portions in Assam and administrated them temporally. Since that period Muslims began to settle over the region.

Though the mothers of both were sisters, Prithviraj eloped with Jai Chand’s daughter. In return Jai Chand––unlike other Rajput kings and chieftains, who supported Prithviraj––allied with Muhammad Ghori, who succeeded in capturing Delhi in his second attempt in 1192. Ghori did not spare Jai Chand either and in 1193-94 defeated him in the Battle of Chandawar. He was killed and his son Harish Chandra ruled Kannauj as a sub-ordinate of Ghori and his successors until 1225, when Iltutmish ended his reign.
