Ram Vilas Paswan and the politics of symbolic secularism

By Ayub Khan, Lok Janshakti Party leader Ram Vilas Paswan now appears to have settled in comfortably with Narendra Modi and the NDA alliance. It was quite a turnaround for the Dalit leader who had quit the Vajpayee led alliance over the 2002 Gujarat massacres. He had then become a martyr to the secular cause and was much applauded at home and abroad for the ‘principled stance.’ That step also gave a temporary fillip to his long held ambition of becoming the first Dalit prime minister of India. But those plans again failed to take of as another contender, ‘dalit ki beti’ Mayawati, grew in both influence and power across the country and not just in her home state. Despite the failure in achieving his ambitions he remained relevant by making right noises at the right time and as a consolation was made a minister in the UPA government.

By Prof. Abdur Rahim, Now that the union minister for minorities Mr. AR Antulay has agreed with the Government's version that there is no need to promote the Hindu terrorist factor behind the killing of Hemant Karkare, the fact remains that his demand was seen with prejudiced glasses. Here we deal with a senior journalist MJ Akbar's views making mockery of the senior minister.

Remembering Prof. Iqbal Ansari: A tireless defender of human rights

By Mahtab Alam, On Sunday evening, October 11th, 2009, when Prof. Iqbal A Ansari was sitting next to me in a meeting here in Delhi, I had no clue that- I will be not able to meet him again. In fact, it’s still unbelievable for me that he is no more among us. His untimely death left most of us bewildered. It is an irreparable loss for human and civil rights’ movements in India. Prof. Iqbal Ansai, who was always at the forefront of the human and civil movements throughout the country over two decades left this world Tuesday early morning following a heart attack.

State of religious freedom in India

By Kashif-ul-Huda, TwoCircles.net, It doesn’t take a US Commission to know that religious freedom is shrinking in India but it does help in throwing a light on this subject. There has been a new wave of anti-conversion laws passed since 2000 that takes away individual’s right to choose a religion – a clear violation of fundamental right guaranteed by the Indian Constitution. The Article 25 of the Constitution gives citizens of India the right to “profess, practice and propagate religion,” all these rights have come into increased attack in the last few years.

Leveraging Haj savings for community uplift

Dr Syed Zafar Mahmood, Never in the annals of history were all monetarily eligible and physically robust Muslims of the world able to perform Haj. In future too only a select few would perform Haj; that is as per the divine design. Yet, each one of us enjoys the privilege to constructively aspire to be part of such 'select few'. Keeping pace with the world price index Haj expenses are going up year after year. In India, it takes an average Muslim around seven to eight years to save up for Haj. During this period, many persons often save money in unsystematic and traditional manner. They believe that money kept under the bed, pillow, in the pot or even in bank locker is not only safe but also such methods of saving are free of Riba.

Politically Incorrect! Political satire in Urdu poetry

By Vikas Datta, "Here richly, with ridiculous display,/The Politician's corpse was laid away/While all of his acquaintance sneered and slanged/I wept: for I had longed to see him hanged", was prolific English author Hillaire Belloc's caustic send-off to an unnamed politician. The verse also exemplifies the vibrant, universal tradition of political satire that exists alongside organised government - from the plays of Aristophanes in ancient Athens to TV shows like "Yes Minister" and "Saturday Night Live" now. And closer to home, both Hindi and Urdu literature used it to devastating effect.

Privatization of justice & “Sharia courts”

By Faizan Mustafa, The apex court in its landmark decision on 7th July, 2014 held that sharia courts are not courts as Indian legal does not recognize a parallel judicial system. In fact neither Muslim Personal Board nor seminary at Deoband ever asserted that sharia courts are ‘courts’ in the strict sense of the term. But then is it not a fact that privatization of justice is fact of life not only in India but in most developed countries? Does our law not recognize arbitration and other alternative methods of dispute resolution? Are not sharia courts and fatwas different and therefore should not be clubbed together? What has been the performance of sharia courts in last 94 years? Has not the latest decision given new lease of life to the sharia courts? are some of the pertinent issues which need critical examination.

Muslim Political leaders are maligning the community through irresponsible statements

By A. Mirsab, TwoCircles.net, It is very unfortunate for the Muslim community that those who are suppose to represent them as a whole on the biggest political forum of the world is actually letting them down by speaking irresponsibly against opposition parties or leaders. While hurling abuses against the opposition, Muslim leaders are losing their moral ethics and are using such a language which is actually in turn hitting back the community strongly.

Relevance of Khudai Khidmatgar today

By Sandeep Pandey, It would seem improbable today but in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan, which is centre of continued violence today dominated by Taliban, there existed an organisation dedicated to non-violence called Khudai Khidmatgar not very long back. The person who founded this was called Frontier Gandhi – Khand Abdul Gaffar Khan popularly known as Badshah Khan or Bacha Khan. The first organisation he founded was called Anjuman-e-Islah-e-Afghania which worked for education of Pathans or Pashtuns. Badshah Khan was not a politician. He was more of a social reformer. He believed in socialism. He worked for empowerment of women, peaceful resolution of feuds between community members known for their short temper, abolition of alcohol, etc. He started the first school in his own village Utmanzai. How difficult his work must have been can be imagined from the 2012 incident when a teenager activist Malala Yousafzai was shot at merely for advocating the right of girls to education. Malala also hails from the Pashtun community. What the Taliban did to Malala, the British did to Gaffar Khan much earlier as they banned his school.

By John Dayal, Several political columnists have in recent weeks noted how elements of the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh, professing a right wing ultra-nationalist and Hindu majoritarian political ideology, have moved from the fringes where they were for decades, to the centre stage of the national discourse in India after Mr. Narendra Modi came to power in May this year in the wake of a massive electoral victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party, BJP.

My name is Carmichael and I am not a terrorist

By NM Sampathkumar Iyangar My name is not Khan and I am no Bollywood celebrity. So, the Indian media will not go into overdrive when an American airport staffer lets me in only after a couple of hours of wait. There was a huge uproar about a ‘national insult’ when a superstar of that name was not cleared in a jiffy; the immigration official got suspicious due to his host’s wheeler-dealer background and gave him the discomfort of queuing up to see his boss.

Book Review: Chasing A Mirage

It is a tragedy of the post-911 world that the field of Islamic concepts and terminologies have also fallen a victim to misunderstanding, misinterpretation, and plain hysteria. Fuelling these fears among the masses are not only rabid Islamophobes but also those who claim to be nothing of that sort but whose actions speak otherwise. Canadian TV host and commentator Tarek Fatah belongs to the latter category. He has a history of mindless criticism of things as mundane as the aversion to music to more significant ones as the introduction of Sharia-based laws in Ontario.

Rhapsody 2008 – a symphony of different cultures for medical professionals

By Shobha Shukla, A thing of beauty is a joy forever, and yet we have 'no time to watch at beauty's glance, and see how well her feet can dance'. Well, this is the price we seem to be paying for our economic development. Today's world of cut throat competition and cutting edge technology has lacerated our soul. Any activity of a non competitive nature with no financial gains is looked down upon. In our quest for professional knowledge, we have given up the pursuit of happiness, feels the legendary teacher and Surgeon Professor (Dr) Rama Kant.
