New Delhi : A parliamentary panel has come down heavily on the ministry of minority affairs for under utilisation of funds, poor implementation of welfare schemes and not possessing data on those living below the poverty line (BPL).
The panel headed by Sumitra Mahajan, a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member of the Lok Sabha, has called for speedy implementation of schemes for the minority people, and optimum utilisation of allocated funds as well.

AMU to set up modern information and communication lab
Lucknow : The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) will set up a state-of-art information and communication laboratory for its engineering students, a university official said Friday.
"An alumnus of the university, M.P. Varshney, has donated Rs.1 million for setting up the lab," AMU spokesperson Rahat Abrar told IANS on phone.
The lab will be equipped with all the latest information and communication technology devices, including fast-speed computers, Internet and other facilities, he added.

Ahmedabad : In a major development the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate rejected Thursday the state government's plea for brain mapping and narco analysis tests of six police officers, including three senior IPS officers, who have been arrested in the Sohrabuddin staged encounter case.
The Central Investigation Department (CID) Crime had put up an application for the test of the arrested cops on the ground that much more information was needed as these police officers had not revealed some very important facts.

    The death toll of five days of infighting has exceeded 63, a statement by the health ministry said. In southern Gaza Strip town of Khan Younis, a 13-year-old Palestinian was killed after he was caught in crossfire during clashes between the two factions.

Yemeni President condemns terror act targeted at Spanish tourists

Sana'a : President Ali Abdullah Saleh has expressed sorrow and condemned the terror act targeted at Spanish tourists in the Mareb governorate Monday.
The attack resulted in the death of seven Spanish tourists and two Yemenis while eight others were injured. The initial information indicated that the al-Qeada is behind the attack.
Saleh said that the terrorists who are behind the attack will not escape justice.

Baghdad : Twenty people were killed and 60 wounded when a car bomb exploded in central Baghdad Thursday evening, an interior ministry source said.
"Our latest reports said that at least 20 people were killed and 60 others were wounded in the attack," the source told Xinhua.
The car bomb went off at about 6.30 p.m. (1430 GMT) in a crowded commercial area near the Saba Qsour Intersection in Karradah neighbourhood, the source said.
Fifth Palestinian militant killed in Gaza operations

Gaza : A fifth Palestinian militant was killed on Thursday evening during the ongoing Israeli ground and air strikes on southeast Gaza Strip, Palestinian medics said.
Medics in southern Gaza Strip said that an Islamic Hamas militant was killed and two were wounded in a fresh Israeli airstrike on Palestinian militants in the area.

Kabul : The Taliban has set the eighth deadline for executing some South Korean hostages, which would last until 4:00 p.m. (1130 GMT) on Monday, a purported Taliban spokesman Yousuf Ahmadi said Monday.
Taliban extends deadline for abducted Koreans

Kabul : After killing two South Korean hostages, Taliban guerrillas Tuesday extended the deadline for 21 remaining hostages till 12 p.m. (0730 GMT) Wednesday.
A purported Taliban spokesman, Yousuf Ahmadi, told Xinhua on telephone from an undisclosed place that militants would kill more hostages if their demands were not met.
He also said some hostages were in very bad condition and they may die a natural death.
This is the ninth time Taliban militants have revised the deadline for killing Korean hostages.
