PNA calls on Israel to end occupation of Palestinian territories

By Xinhua Ramallah : Palestinian National Authority (PNA) on Wednesday called on Israel to respect international resolutions and end its occupation of the Palestinian territories. "Ending the occupation of the Palestinian territories, which dates back to 1967, is the core of the peace process," Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said during an interview with Voice of Palestine radio. Erekat said that "the era of guardianship and the Palestinian dependency has completely gone and there are no options but the creation of a Palestinian statehood."

Top rebel leader, 12 insurgents captured in Afghanistan

By Xinhua, Kabul : Afghan troops have arrested 12 Taliban insurgents, while a top rebel was captured in Uruzgan province in the southern part of the country. Troops with support from the US-led coalition forces have arrested a dozen Taliban insurgents in operations in Khost province in the east and Nimroz province in the southwest, a statement from the US-led coalition forces said Thursday. The military operations were carried out Wednesday.

British peer calls for widening dialogue with Iran

The UK will not get constructive dialogue with the Iranian government "unless we broaden it out to a wider framework," Wallace told Foreign Office Minister Lord Malloch-Brown.

Israel, Palestinians to start writing pact

By SPA, Al-Quds (Jerusalem) : Israeli and Palestinian negotiators agreed to start drafting elements of a proposed peace accord, the chief Palestinian negotiator said. We agreed with the Israelis to begin writing the positions, Ahmed Qureia told reporters late Friday. Qureia did not say what issue the two sides would start with. If they reach agreement on any issue, then they will draft a single provision, he said. If not, they will lay out on paper their divergent views, he was quoted as saying by the Associated Press.

Musharraf advised to convene parliament session

By Xinhua Islamabad : Pakistan's caretaker Prime Minister Mohammedmian Soomro Monday sent a communication to President Pervez Musharraf, advising him to convene the new parliament's session. According to the constitution, Musharraf has to convene the National Assembly session on the advice of the prime minister. Earlier, caretaker Law Minister Syed Afzal Haider wrote to Soomro for the convening of the session. "The president will either set a date for the assembly session Wednesday or Thursday," Haider told the private GEO television.

60 Taliban killed in South Waziristan

In northern Iraq, 25 people died 43 were injured in a truck bombing in eastern Mosul. The vehicle blew up early morning in Kurdish-dominated Wardak village, security sources said. Work on Saudi rail project to start by 2008-end

By IANS Dubai : Work on the 20 billion Saudi riyals railway project connecting the holy city of Makkah with Jeddah and Madinah is set to start by the end of this year, Saudi Arabia's Transport Minister Jabara Al-Seraisry has said. "Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah is greatly interested in the project, which aims at easing the heavy traffic between the two holy cities of Makkah and Madinah, particularly during the Haj and Ramadan seasons," Al-Seraisry told Arab News on the sidelines of a maritime transport forum in Jeddah.

Ridley told reporters here Sunday she has been based in West Asia since 2000 and has also worked with Al Jazeera as a TV presenter. She is here - her first visit to India - on the invitation of the student's wing of Jamath-e-Islami, a Muslim social organization.

Iran’s supreme leader grants amnesty to 950 prisoners

By IANS, Tehran : Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has granted amnesty to 950 prisoners earlier convicted by various courts in the country, IRNA reported Tuesday. The decision was made on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Prophet of Islam March 15. The pardon was made at the request of Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi. The Islamic Republic of Iran usually grants pardon or commutes the punishment of those convicted by the country's tribunals during the Iranian national or religious events.

Protesting Dhaka judges forcibly retired, reinstated

By IANS, Dhaka : Two judges who led a hundred others in a demonstration against a government decision were forced into retirement, but have been reinstated after they apologised. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told her cabinet colleagues Monday that the conduct of the two judges was "unseemly". The public which approaches the court for redressal of its problems, does not expect "such indecorous behaviour from judges", she was quoted as saying by New Age newspaper.
