Patna : It can only happen in Bihar. A Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) legislator has been found to be not a citizen of India but of Nepal, and her name struck off the voter list.
LJP legislator Nagina Devi's name was removed from the voter list on the orders of Sitamarhi Sub Divisional Officer Bharat Jha. She represents the Bathnaha constituency.
"Yes, her name was removed after she failed to produce any documentary evidence to prove her Indian citizenship," Jha said Friday.
CPI-M leader suspended for misbehaving with woman army officer

Kolkata : A former Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) legislator in West Bengal was suspended from the party Sunday for misbehaving with a woman army officer on a train and creating public nuisance.
Prakash Minj, the former MLA from the Phansidewa constituency in Darjeeling district, was temporarily stripped of his party membership by the CPI-M.
The decision was taken at a CPI-M district committee meeting in Darjeeling where the party members concurred that Minj's behaviour was detrimental to the party's image.
Lalu dismisses mid-term poll speculation

Patna : Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Sunday dismissed speculation of a mid-term poll even as he expressed confidence that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) will retain power whenever polls were held.
"What speculation? It was all created by BJP's men in the media, there is no question of mid-term polls," Lalu told a press conference here before leaving for an official function of Indian railways in Ara town, about 60 km from here.

Ranchi : Riding on the sympathy wave following the killing of its MP, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) Sunday retained the Jamshedpur Lok Sabha seat, winning the by-election by a margin of nearly 60,000 votes.
JMM candidate Suman Mahto, wife of slain MP Sunil Mahto, got 293,003 votes while Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Dinesh Sarangi managed 234,189 votes.
The by-election had taken place Aug 29. The seat fell vacant after Sunil Mahto was killed by the Maoist rebels in March.

It eventually needed the intervention of top officials from the customs department and the security establishment and many telephone calls to have the packet delivered to 10 Janpath, her residence, well informed sources told IANS.

New Delhi : Railway Minister Lalu Prasad escaped unhurt after a special train in which he was travelling to Bihar caught fire Saturday.
Railway officials here said the 'MR (Minister for Railways) Special' carrying Lalu Prasad was proceeding from Dehri on Sone to Patna when some smoke and sparking was noticed in an air-conditioned compartment carrying his staff members. The train was then approaching the Rafiganj railway station in Bihar.

For a start, it has been able to work out a formula for pacifying the belligerent Left parties by setting up a committee to examine the deal. Woman arrested for throwing stones at Lalu Prasad’s car

New Delhi : A woman was arrested here Friday for allegedly hurling stones at the official car of Railway Minster Lalu Prasad while he was driving down to the parliament.
The incident took place in the morning outside the minister's Tughlak Road office, when the woman, aged about 40, suddenly emerged from among the pwople assembled there and started pelting Lalu Prasad's car with stones.
The minister didn't receive any injuries. His security officials caught the woman, identified as Rita, and took her to a nearby police station for questioning.

Patna : A Bihar court Thursday convicted Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Mohammed Shahabuddin for a murderous attack on then Siwan superintendent of police (SP) in 1996.
This is the third time Shahabuddin has been convicted this year. He will be sentenced in the case Friday.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Gyaneshwar Prasad Srivastava of a special court inside Siwan jail, 150 km from here, found him guilty. Two of his bodyguards were also convicted.
N-deal operation on hold for now

New Delhi : The India-US civilian nuclear deal will not be made operational till a committee comprising representatives from the government and the Left parties gives its views on the pact, it was announced Thursday.
"The government will take into account the committee's findings while operationalising the nuclear deal," External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee told reporters here.

Ranchi : A meagre 45 percent turnout was witnessed in the by and large peaceful by-election to the Jamshedpur Lok Sabha seat Wednesday.
Official sources said some 1,000 voters could not exercise their franchise after they found their names missing from the voters' list.
Air Force helicopters were pressed into service to ensure a free and fair election, which became necessary following the killing of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) MP Sunil Mahto in March by Maoist rebels.

BJP, Congress workers clash in Shimla

Shimla : A senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and about a dozen workers of the party were injured Wednesday in a clash with the workers of the Congress here.
Former Himachal Pradesh chief minister Shanta Kumar and some of his party men had to be rushed to the hospital. They were released after treatment. The BJP, however claimed, many more cadres of their party had sustained injuries.

Former Haryana chief minister dies

Chandigarh : Former Haryana chief minister Banarsi Dass Gupta died in New Delhi Wednesday. He was 89.
He was under treatment for the last few months for age related ailments.
Gupta, a Congress leader, was the chief minister of Haryana twice, first from Dec 1, 1975 to April 29, 1977 and later from May 23, 1990 to July 12, 1990.
He was also a member of Rajya Sabha in 1996.
Gupta, a prominent Aggarwal community leader, had earlier served as the deputy chief minister and speaker of the Haryana state assembly.

Natwar Singh's Britain-based relative Vipin Khanna, who faces a probe over his alleged role in the Barrak Missile deal and the Iraq oil-for-food scam, was asked to approach the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) trial court for his passport which the agency had seized in March.
The Supreme Court asked Khanna to approach the designated CBI court, while directing the probe agency to deposit his passport to the lower court at Patiala House here within a fortnight.

New Delhi : The Delhi High Court Wednesday acquitted former central coal minister and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) chief Shibu Soren of the charge of murder of his private secretary Shashinath Jha.
A division bench of Justice R.S. Sodhi and H.R. Malhotra stayed the judgements of the trial court of Nov 28 and Dec 5, 2006 saying the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had failed to prove the charges against Soren and the other accused.
"The prosecution failed miserably. Trial court analyses on the evidence are not convincing," said the high court.
