Aero sports centre launched in Haryana

Chandigarh : The country's first aero sports centre was Sunday launched at Bachhaud air strip near Narnaul town in Haryana.
Named after former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, himself a trained commercial pilot, the centre has been set up by the state government in collaboration with the Aero Club of India.
It is the country's first National Aero Sports Centre.
Inaugurating the centre in the presence of Aero Club of India president and MP Satish Sharma, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said the centre would provide facility for those keen on flying and adventure.

Hissar (Haryana) : A man who claims to be the coach of international cricketer Yuvraj Singh was arrested on charges of raping a national-level judoka in this Haryana town, police said Saturday.
Sukhwinder Singh Bawa, who was arrested this week, has been sent to judicial custody for 14 days.
Hissar district police chief B. Satish Ballal confirmed Saturday that Bawa had been arrested on rape charges.
He has been accused by a young judo player from here of raping her in July this year.

Devanshi won the under-12 category of the TopGun Pistol Shoot at the Siri Fort Shooting Range here. She collected 183 points, including a series of 91 and 92.
Co-incidentally, Rana too made his first mark at the age of 12. In 1988, he made his national debut and won a silver medal at the 31st National Shooting Championship in Ahmedabad.

Hukam Singh, who died Tuesday, was the real power in the capital's table tennis circuit, irrespective of the post he held. He was joint secretary, secretary, treasurer and organising secretary of the Delhi Table Tennis Association (DTTA) and his home address 6, Beadon Pura, Karol Bagh, was synonymous with table tennis in the city.

Thiruvananthapuram : There is finally some good news for football lovers in Kerala. After a long wait of 25 years, the once-prestigious G.V. Raja Football Tournament will be revived later this month.
Speaking to IANS, T.P.Dasan, president of the Kerala State Sports Council, said all arrangements are in place and the tournament would be held by the end of this month.
The organising committee of the tournament met early this week and decided in principle to stage the tournament with 16 teams - eight from the state and eight from outside.

Thanks to initiatives by Pakistan and India, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) decided in October 1969 to organise a World Cup once every two years (subsequently every four years). The first World Cup was allotted to Pakistan in 1971, but was shifted to the Real Polo Club in Barcelona, Spain, because of security issues in Lahore. At that time nobody had even thought of playing hockey on astro-turf and the tournament was played on natural grass.

"The new coach, the robot, is teaching the players about strokes, styles, techniques and drills to make them learn more about the wonderful sport of table tennis," said Parag Agarwal, a coach with UPTTA.
UPTTA officials said the China made robot, costing about Rs.85,000, was best suited for practice sessions as it acted like a second player of the game, responding to its opponent's backhand and forehand strokes with different styles.
Hockey Olympian Erman R. Bastian passes away

New Delhi : Erman R. Bastian, former Olympic hockey player, died after a prolonged illness at his home in Durg, Chhattisgarh Friday night, according to his son Anand Joseph.
The burial took place the following day.
Erman, as he was popularly known in his playing days, was 74. He suffered from recurrent paralytic strokes. He is survived by his wife, son Ashok, who is an engineer, and two daughters.

Legendary goalkeeper Peter Thangaraj passes away

New Delhi : India's legendary goalkeeper Peter Thangaraj passed away in Bokaro Monday night following a heart-attack. He was 74.
Thangaraj, nicknamed 'lamp post' during his playing days, is survived by his wife, a son and three daughters.
He belonged to the golden era of India football and was part of the team that won gold in the 1962 Asian Games in Jakarta and finished runners-up in the 1964 Asia Cup in Tel Aviv.
Thangaraj also played in the 1956 Melbourne and 1960 Rome Olympics. India finished fourth in Melbourne, which remained its best performance in the mega event.

New Delhi : Former Davis Cupper and Asian Games medallist Shyam Minotra died Tuesday after a prolonged battle with cancer, the All India Tennis Association said.
Minotra, 62, was a widower and left behind his only son.
A tennis player of great talent, Minotra could beat any top star on his day, and his scalps included the great Romanian Ille Nastase.
He was a part of the Davis Cup team in the 1960s, and gave India the Asian Championship doubles title along with S P Mishra defeating Premjit Lal and Jaideep Mukerjea.

New Delhi : Former India footballer Mariappa Kempaiah, who played in the 1956 and the 1960 Olympics, passed away in Bangalore, Wednesday.
He was 75 and is survived by his wife, one son and two daughters.
Kempaiah, a competent midfielder, played a crucial role in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, where India finished fourth, losing to Bulgaria in the play-off for third place. He was also in the 1960 Rome Olympic squad, where India again finished fourth, India's best-ever showing at the quadrennial event.

Shimla : An army expedition has traversed the Manirang Pass at a height of 18,600 feet in Himachal Pradesh after a gap of 10 years, an official said Wednesday.
The pass connects the tribal belt of Pooh in Kinnaur district with Kaza in Lahaul and Spiti district.
The 14-member expedition of the 24th Battalion of the Punjab Regiment was led by Major Rajeev Kumar and Naib Subedar Baldev Singh.
Covering a distance of 117 km, the pass was scaled from the southern side in 10 days.
