Curfew in Sopore, separatist shutdown in Srinagar

By IANS, Srinagar: Curfew continued Saturday in Jammu and Kashmir's Sopore town, a day after the killing of two youths by security forces led to violence, while life in Srinagar was affected by a separatist shutdown. "Curfew continues in Sopore but the situation there is peaceful," a police officer said here. However, there were reports of protesters defying curfew and pelting stones at a few places in Sopore, some 55 km from here.

He added that the capacity of Bushehr power plant would be 1,000 megawatts, IRNA new agency reported Sunday. New year in Iran begins March 21. Fattah said that with the delivery of the first consignment of fuel by Russia, 500 megawatts of electricity from the power plant would be on the national grid by next summer. He hoped the plant would operate on full capacity by March 20, 2009.

Islamabad : A top Islamist militant commander with extensive fighting experience in Afghanistan has based himself with 40 fighters inside the radical Lal Masjid where at least 21 people have been killed in gunbattles between madrassa students and security forces.

The unnamed commander belonging to Mehsud tribe and having vast fighting experience in the restive Afghanistan has managed to enter Jamia Hafsa with a group of 40 fighters to support the students of Lal Masjid against the government, a source privy to the masjid said.

Three of family poisoned by domestic help in Delhi

Yadav, his wife Milan and their nine-year-old son Kartavya were allegedly given poison by their servant, Raju Nepali, at their home in Vivek Vihar late Saturday, a police official said. However, the servant did not give poison to their three-year-old son. Nepali is absconding with some cash and valuables, he added.

Agra cop shot dead

By IANS, Agra : A police sub-inspector was shot dead by a gang of criminals here Monday evening. Police sources said sub-inspector P.L. Kushwaha from Mainpuri district was on special duty for the Bhim Nagari inauguration here Tuesday evening by Mayawati. Around 5 p.m., he was approached by three people at the Mantola crossing. One shot him from point blank range, killing him on the spot. One of the assailants was nabbed by passersby. According to sources, Kushwaha had earlier got into an altercation with the father of the killer.

By IANS, Bhubaneswar: At least three people, including a minor, were killed and eight others injured when a boat carrying 11 people capsized in a reservoir in Orissa's Jagatsinghpur district, police said Thursday. The boat capsized in the reservoir of Paradip Phosphate Limited in Paradip town at about 7.30 p.m. Wednesday, sub-divisional police officer S.K. Das told IANS. The accident occurred when company employees were taking a boat ride with their families. Paradip is about 200 km from here.

By IANS Udaipur : A guesthouse owner in Udaipur was arrested Wednesday on the charge of raping a British journalist, and an American tourist complained she was molested in the Hindu holy town of Pushkar in Rajasthan. "We have arrested Prabat Singh, owner of a guesthouse in Udaipur, on the charge that he raped the British journalist on Dec 23 while she was staying in that guesthouse," a police official told IANS here.

Man shot dead in north Delhi

By IANS, New Delhi : A man was shot dead by two unidentified assailants near Pitampura in northwest Delhi Saturday night, the police said Sunday. Ganpat Ram, 57, a resident of Shalimar Bagh, was going in his Maruti swift car when two motorcycle borne youth intercepted him around 9 p.m., shot him and fled from the spot, according to the police. Seriously injured, Ram was taken to nearby Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital where he was declared brought dead.
