UN Committee wants more from India on human rights

By IANS, New Delhi : A UN committee has recommended repeal of the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act, more budgetary support for the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and setting up of human rights commissions and courts in all states. In its recommendations, the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (UN CESCR) also called for the implementation of the Sachar Committee report (on socio-economic status of the Muslims) “without further delay”.

Cyclone toll in Bangladesh rises to 2,579

By Xinhua Dhaka : The toll from Cyclone Sidr that devastated Bangladesh last week has gone up to 2,579, according to the flood and disaster management ministry of Bangladesh. In the latest report released Monday, the disaster management ministry put the total number of people injured at 1,491 and 1,063 as still missing. However, the unofficial count put the toll figure at over 3,000. Pakistani troops kill 10 militants

The raid on a checkpoint in the Mula Said area also left two soldiers dead and six others wounded, the Frontier Corps paramilitary force said in a statement. Taliban rebels have stepped up attacks on the government forces in Bajaur, located near the Afghan border, during the last few days.     The sentence was announced at Woolwich Crown Court in east London, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reported.
