By IANS, Lucknow: A young woman has been arrested in Uttar Pradesh's Mau district and 40 tortoises recovered from her, police said Saturday. Seema Banerjee, 28, was arrested Friday evening from Matlupur area, police officer D.K. Sharma said in Mau, some 300 km from Lucknow. "The tortoises were recovered from two air bags she carried." She has said she worked for a gang involved in the illegal supply of tortoises and animal skins to clients in Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh and Nepal as well as various states of India.

Colombo : Government troops repulsed a Tamil rebel attack on a military detachment in north-western Sri Lanka early Friday, killing nine rebels and losing three of their soldiers, a military official said.

Rebels initially launched a mortar and small arms fire attack on the detachment at Niatchchenai in Mannar, 320 km north of the capital, in the early hours of Friday.

Three soldiers were killed and four injured in the initial attack and troops retaliated, inflicting casualties on the rebels, the official said.

Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has passed an order ending the legal battle for control over the affairs of Punjab Wakf Board, with its chairperson-cum-MLA Razia Sultana on one side and CEO-cum-IPS officer Mohammad Izhar Alam on the other.

The High Court has ordered that the board constituted on November 9, 2005 by the Punjab government, following the differences among its members, would cease to exist and the board constituted on November 11, 2004, shall continue to work.
