Islamic nations urge US to withdraw from Iraq

Islamabad, May 18 (NNN-ANTARA News) -- Foreign ministers from Muslim nations called Thursday on international forces to pull out of Iraq as soon as possible. The joint declaration came at the end of a three-day meeting in Islamabad of foreign ministers from the 57-member Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC). "We emphasise ... accelerating the capacity of the Iraqi security forces and securing the earliest possible withdrawal of foreign forces from Iraq," it said. The declaration also warned that Iraq should not be split along Sunni-Shiite lines.

Supreme Court stops CBI from arresting Ashok Todi

By IANS, New Delhi : The Supreme Court Tuesday stopped the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) from arresting Kolkata industrialist Ashok Todi for his alleged role in his son-in-law Rizwanur Rehman's mysterious death last year. A bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice Aftab Alam, however, asked Todi to appear before the Kolkata metropolitan court on Dec 1 in response to the arrest warrant issued by the court earlier. The bench also directed the Kolkata Metropolitan Court to consider Todi's bail plea on the day he appears before it.

Upholding life imprisonment for Rahul, a division bench of Justices Pradeep Nandrajog and Suresh Kait said: "He (Rahul) acted not only as a beast but also as a savage." The court, however, set the other person, Amit, free and said he had already served his punishment.

TB patient hangs himself at Kolkata hospital

By IANS, Kolkata : Depressed over learning that he has tuberculosis, a patient committed suicide by hanging himself in a bathroom of a government hospital in central Kolkata, police said Monday. "Arshad Ali Mollah, 44, was found hanging from the ceiling of a bathroom at a ward of Calcutta Medical College and Hospital Sunday night. Preliminary investigations show depression as the cause of death," city police deputy commissioner (headquarters) Vinet K. Goyal told reporters. He said no suicide note has been found.

At least six drowned trying to board Nile ferry

Sufiya Maudany denied anticipatory bail, arrested

By IANS, Kochi : The Kerala High Court Thursday refused to grant anticipatory bail to Sufiya Maudany, wife of People's Democratic Party chief Abdul Nazir Maudany, in a bus burning case of 2005. She was arrested shortly after the court's order. Sufiya was named 10th accused in the case early this month. The first accused in the case is south India chief of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) T.
