Fake currency racket busted in Orissa, five arrested

Bhubaneswar, Sep 17 (IANS) Five people, including two women, have been arrested from Orissa's Cuttack city and fake currency worth Rs.300,000 seized from them, officials said Monday. The accused had come from the neighbouring Jharkhand state and were staying in a lodge in the Banka Bajar area of Cuttack, about 25 km from state capital Bhubaneswar. Car bombing kills two in Iraq

By Xinhua Baghdad : At least two people were killed and 10 injured in a car bomb explosion in Kirkuk, some 250 km north of Baghdad Wednesday, a local police source said. "A car bomb parked near the Samir Restaurant on a main road in Kirkuk exploded near a passing Kurdish soldiers' convoy," the city police chief told Xinhua. Father of the victim Iqbal Khan said his daughter was abducted by three local young men while she was alone at her home in the Bhamra village at Bulandshaher. She was then taken to a secluded place and gang raped, Balchand said.

Kabul : One of the German hostages purportedly held by the Taliban was still alive, but a second hostage had died of a heart attack, the Afghan foreign ministry said Saturday.

In a day of fast-changing developments, a ministry spokesman said that Kabul authorities were working to secure the safe return of the hostage still alive.

Central Waqf Council gets Rs 290 lakh grant

New Delhi : Union Minister for Minority Affairs A.R. Antulay informed the Rajya Sabha Saturday that the government has increased yearly grant to Central Waqf Council from Rs 206 lakh in 2006-07 to Rs 290 lakh in 2007-08 in order to ensure smooth functioning of the waqf council.

In the financial year 2005-06 the grant to Central Waqf Council was Rs 145.25 lakh.

Hardware engineer lynched to death in west Delhi

By IANS, New Delhi : A 32-year-old hardware engineer paid the price for intervening in a financial dispute as he was beaten up and hacked to death by eight assailants in west Delhi, police said Tuesday. Anand was thrashed and attacked with sharp-edged weapons when he tried to intervene to pacify a scuffle that took place between two of his neighbours, Premwati and Paramjeet, over an old financial dispute near his house in Bindapur late Monday. Anand, working with a contractor in Karol Bagh, died on way to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital.
