By IANS Chandigarh : Punjab Police have been unable to interrogate former director general of police (DGP) S.S. Virk even once since his arrest on Sunday on charges of corruption and harbouring of terrorists. Virk, who was arrested in New Delhi, is being treated at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here after doctors on Monday found his blood pressure to be high and suffering from accelerated hypertension. On Tuesday, a court in Mohali town remanded Virk in judicial custody for 15 days.

Saudi army officer held in Iraq for World Cup terror plot

By DPA, Baghdad : A Saudi army officer was arrested in Iraq Monday for past attacks and for involvement in an alleged Al Qaeda plot targeting the World Cup events in South Africa, an Iraqi military spokesperson said. Saudi Colonel Azzam al-Qahtani, also known as Sanan al-Saudi, entered Iraq in 2004 and is believed to have been involved in attacks on religious sites in Karbala and Najaf, Iraqi General Qassem Atta said. He is accused of cooperating with Ayman al-Zawahiri, Al Qaeda's second in command, in planning attacks on the World Cup events in South Africa, which begin in June.

Robbers abduct six in Madhya Pradesh, release three

"While the abductions took place Tuesday, we learnt about them Thursday when three of those released by the robbers came to us for help," Shivpuri District Superintendent of Police Dinesh Chandra Sharma said. U.S. soldier killed in bomb attack in Baghdad

"Chhattisgarh recorded 436 deaths in Maoist-related violence in 2007, as against 458 casualties reported in 2006. But the deaths of policemen and special police officers (SPOs) shot up to 200 last year, while that number was 74 in 2006," Girdhari Nayak, Inspector General (Maoist Operations) told IANS. Gujarat court acquits nine of waging war charges

By IANS, Ahmedabad : A local court Friday acquitted nine people, including an advocate, who were charged with waging war against the nation and hatching a conspiracy to create terror in Gujarat after the 2002 communal riots. Additional Sessions Judge A.H. Shah acquitted advocate Mohammed Ali and eight others - Mohammed Abdul Bari, Istekhar ul Hasan, Abdul Rahim, Mohammed Safiuddin, Saeed Akbar, Javedkhan Azizkhan, Aslam Nagori and Ahmed Hussain Mansuri. The court, in its 125-page judgment, observed that the prosecution had failed to prove their case against the accused.

Government plans three universities for minorities
