More than 80 percent of the women here are saying no to their age-old family tradition - flesh trade. The village with a population of 400 has 180 women and most of them are involved in the flesh trade. The people are nomadic and the desert climate makes agriculture difficult. Consequently, the men while away their time and allow the women to take up sex work to sustain their families.

By Vishal Gulati,IANS, Shimla : A new species of blind snake has been discovered for the first time in Himachal Pradesh, with a 287 mm long specimen having 25 rows of scales around its shiny dark brown body found from a village in the state's Mandi district. This species, large worm snake, was classified by scientists of the Solan-based Zoological Survey of India (ZSI). Its scientific name is Typhlops diardii of family Typhlopidae. The scientists - H.S. Mehta, Uttam Saikia and D.K. Sharma - have got the sample of the species from a village in Mandi district.

Panda, who was in the thick of controversy over his avowal of being "Doosri Radha", the beloved companion of Lord Krishna, has now claimed a 'male identity'. Panda now calls himself Mohan, another name of the popular Hindu deity Krishna. "I am incarnation of Mohan," Panda told reporters here Friday. Wearing anklets, a nose ring and vermilion on his forehead, Panda arrived with his head covered with a dupatta at a family court for a hearing of the pending case of maintenance filed by his wife Veena Panda.

Haryana mango production soars

By IANS, Chandigarh: Mango cultivation is gaining ground in Haryana with its production and area under cultivation increasing by nearly three times in two decades, an official said Saturday. Financial Commissioner Roshan Lal said that mango production went up from 19,900 tonnes in 1990-91 to 64,570 tonnes in 2009. He attributed this to the use of latest technology by farmers. The area under mango cultivation also increased from 3,553 hectares to 9,125 hectares. An additional 250 hectares would be brought under mango plantation in 2010-11.

By IANS, Agra : A man wanted for the murder of a youth leader of the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) was Monday shot dead by the police here. Sanju Pandit was killed in a shootout when he was entering Agra. He was on the run since Manish Yadav was murdered last month, Senior Superintendent of Police Prem Prakash said. Two others accused in the case surrendered last week in a court. Another accused, constable Sanjeev Tomar who has been sacked, is absconding.

Rs.50,000 compensation ordered for homeopathic medicine maker

By IANS, New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has directed a drug company to pay compensation of Rs.50,000 to a homeopathic medicine maker whom it had sued for alleged trademark infringement. While dismissing Himalaya Drug Company's plea to restrain homeopathic medicine company SBL Limited from manufacturing homeopathic drug by the name LIV-T, Justice S. Muralidhar said there was no evidence to substantiate the complaint. The court directed Himalaya Drug Company to pay compensation of Rs.50,000 to SBL Limited.
