Lucknow : After prolonged upper caste baiting, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati is back to focussing on her core support base of dalits.
She has begun the exercise by issuing directives to allot 'pattas' (small land holdings) to landless and homeless dalits in the vast rural expanse of the state.
In a circular issued by the chief minister's office Friday, Mayawati directed all divisional commissioners and district magistrates to undertake a special drive for allotment of 'pattas' to "eligible persons", which primarily include landless dalits.

Three men have been booked for killing the Dalit boy, police said.
Kamlesh Kumar, a resident of Kashipur village in Hardoi, about 110 km from Lucknow, was Thursday repeatedly assaulted with wooden sticks and iron rods, following which he died in the fields.
According to police, Kumar was initially spotted hiding in the wheat fields of Neeraj Singh.

People of Belauri village in Purnia district, about 350 km from here, were stunned Friday when they found that eight bodies had disappeared from the Sauraghat Samsan graveyard overnight.
"We found that eight graves were dug up and the bodies missing," villager Ramavatar Sada said.
Sada said the graveyard was used by Dalits and other very poor people to bury their dead as they could afford costly cremations.

Medha Patkar opposes slum demolition

Mumbai : Social activist Medha Patkar Friday tried to stop the razing of hutments at Anna Bhau Sathe Nagar here, demanding that the slum dwellers be first provided alternative accommodation.
Patkar and her supporters dubbed the demolition as anti-Dalit and vowed to stop it.
"They (Dalits) are the backbone of this city. Their rights should not be taken away just because they are poor," she said.
She said about 10,000 residents of the area in Mumbai's northeast suburb had nowhere to go.
