Apex court okays Tamil Nadu quota law

By IANS, New Delhi: The Supreme Court Tuesday granted protection to Tamil Nadu's quota law which provides 69 percent reservation in educational institutions and jobs to scheduled castes and tribes and other backward classes, but advised the state government to revisit the issue. The apex court bench of Chief Justice S.H. Kapadia and Justices K.S. Radhakrishna Rao and Swatanter Kumar directed the state backward classes commission to revisit the reservation issue in the light of the Mandal case judgement dealing with quotas.

In a circular issued by the chief minister's office Friday, Mayawati directed all divisional commissioners and district magistrates to undertake a special drive for allotment of 'pattas' to "eligible persons", which primarily include landless dalits.

Mason Ramesh Jatav was allegedly killed after he demanded Rs.4,000 for the work he had done for farmer Shriram Lodhi, police Sunday said. Thirty-eight-year-old Jatav was killed in Shivpuri district Friday night when he had gone to Shriram's house with his wife to demand back-wages. According to police, Shriram and his relative Gabdu Lodhi took the couple to a nearby field and killed Jatav, a resident of Sirsona village, about 350 km from here.

"We will submit a memorandum to the state government soon, seeking formation of a Forward Commission (Savarna Ayog) to study the socio-economic condition of the upper castes, particularly Brahmins," J.N. Trivedi, a spokesman of the Brahmin Samaj Rajnitik Chetna Samiti of Bihar told IANS here.
