Scrap Religious discrimination in Reservation: 36 communities from 19 states

By TCN Staff Reporter, New Delhi: Demanding to scrap the religious discrimination in reservation for Scheduled Castes and include Muslims and Christian Dalits in SC list, All India Pasmanda Muslim Mahaz along with a number of Dalit groups (both Muslims and Christian) organized a mass rally at Jantar Mantar today. Implementation of Sachchar Committee and Mishra Commission’s were also demanded. Members of 36 backward communities from 19 states took part in the rally.

By IANS, Hisar: An 18-year-old physically challenged Dalit girl was burnt alive after she was trapped in her house which was set on fire by members of a dominant community in Haryana's Hisar district Wednesday. "Some miscreants set some houses in Mirchpur village on fire. A girl, Suman, who could not run out of the house, died of burn injuries. Her father, 70-year-old Tara Chand, is admitted in hospital with 90 per cent burns," O.P. Sheron, deputy commissioner of Hisar, told reporters, here.

He said this in the context of the demand of Muslims & Christians that the definition of 'scheduled caste' should be made religion-neutral by deleting para 3 from the presidential order of 1950. That's what has been stated a couple of days ago by the union Social Justice Minister Thavar Chand Gehlot, "Allowing SC status (to converts to Christianity & Islam) would provide a fillip to religious conversions. The demand is not constitutional and we want to work within the parameters of the statute for the welfare of 'these communities' (read Hindus, Sikhs and Buddhists)."
