By IANS, Ponda (Goa) : Twenty-five years after the Appiko eco-awareness movement swept parts of south India, its leaders say they have seen a "lot of change" specially in the forest policy of Karnataka. "Felling has been banned in the natural forests of the Western Ghats (the sensitive coastal hill range) in Karnataka, which is a very good sign," Appiko leader Pandurang Hegde told IANS while passing through Goa, close to his base in Sirsi, northern Karnataka. "But, on the other hand, so-called development projects are turning into main threats to natural forests," he argued.

By IANS, Ghaziabad : A day after an MMS of a management student stripping made rounds in Noida and Delhi, another girl in a police complaint here has alleged that a man clicked her nude pictures on his mobile and raped her on the threat of making the pictures public. The 22-year-old girl in her complaint said Shamli Kumar, a Loni resident, had first befriended her and then clicked her nude pictures at a secret location. He also exhorted Rs.80,000 from the girl in three instalments for not making the pictures public, the complaint said.

Marathi author, children’s poet Kalyan Inamdar dead

By IANS, Mumbai : Well-known Marathi author and children's poet Kalyan Inamdar expired in Pune Monday afternoon following a brief illness, according to his publisher Arun Jakhade. He was 68 and is survived by his wife and two daughters who are married, Jakhade told IANS by phone from Pune. Inamdar July 2 suffered a brain haemorrhage and was rushed to the Dinanath Mangeshkar Hospital. He died this afternoon around 2.30 pm, Jakhade said.

By IANS, New Delhi : Four Mumbai-based suspects have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping a TV actor and his brother, the police said Tuesday. Rakesh Kathuria, also known as Babla, and his brother Manish were abducted from Mumbai and Delhi respectively in May this year and their kidnappers had "demanded Rs.2.5 million as ransom", Deputy Commissioner of Delhi Police Neeraj Thakur told reporters. Kahturia is also a fashion choreographer. He has acted in TV serials like "Durgesh Nandini" and "Dekh Bhai Dekh". He has worked in many Bhojpuri, Tamil and other regional movies as well.

CBSE Class 10 results for 2008 declared

New Delhi, May 29 (IANS) The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced the Class 10 board examination results Thursday. Scores of students were seen at Internet cafes and calling dedicated telephone numbers to know how they had fared in the examination soon after the results were declared at 8 a.m. This year, 765,095 students appeared for the Class 10 examination in India and abroad. These students from 8,199 schools had written papers at 2,624 centres in March.

By IANS, Bhopal : Sugar prices have declined in the wholesale market in Madhya Pradesh after the government raided sugar mills and godowns across the state and seized around 2,000 tonnes of hoarded sugar in the last four days. "The wholesale price which was Rs.3,300 per quintal till Monday came down to the range of Rs.2,850 and Rs.2,950 and is likely to fall further," Karamchandani, a wholesaler here, told IANS. However, despite ease in wholesale prices, consumers still have to pay Rs.31 to Rs.32 for a kilogram sugar.

Sex racket busted in Chandigarh

Annadurai’s adopted son commits suicide

By IANS Chennai : C.N.A. Parimalam, the adopted son of DMK founder member and former Tamil Nadu chief minister C.N. Annadurai, committed suicide early Tuesday by jumping into a well, police said. Parimalam, 67, was a physician by profession and was reportedly depressed, family sources said. He had retired from government service and his wife had died in 2006. He leaves behind two sons and a daughter. Parimalam suffered from cardiac problems and was admitted in a private hospital, where he had stayed nearly 10 days before returning home Monday evening.
