By IANS, New Delhi : Contemporary sculptor Prithpal Singh Ladi, who has created waves with his futuristic stone monuments, steel dragonflies and frog torsos, is coming to the capital with his first solo show in 10 years on Oct 15. Born in Shillong in 1955, Ladi studied sculpture at the M.S. University in Baroda. He was conferred the National Lalit Kala Akademi (LKA) Award and the Gujarat LKA awards and won a scholarship to Ecole Superieure des Beaux Arts in Paris. He later taught at the School for Architecture, Ahmedabad, and the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi.

He was 71 and is survived by his wife Daya and three sons, Vishal, Vihan and Vivek. The ink and water colour series of Kolkata-based master illustrator Samir Biswas, on display in the capital, are documents for posterity. Biswas, who sticks to art school basics of line drawing and realism, is showing his works at Gallery Windmill, owned by leading architect Pradeep Sachdeva, in Ayanagar, on the outskirts of Delhi. The show closes Oct 25. He is rated as one of the best line drawing artists in the country.

By IANS Kozhikode :A 40-year-old man in Kerala set a new Guinness record Monday by playing the tabla for 102 hours and 45 minutes, bettering his own 2005 feat of 57 hours. Sudheer Kadalundi ended his marathon tabla session at 2 a.m. Monday at Kadalundi, 25 km from here. He began playing the instrument Wednesday (April 2). The venue of the record-breaking performance in the small town wore a festive look. A large number of people had gathered, egging on the exhausted Sudheer, clapping in tandem with the rhythms he played on the tabla.

The Mewar Ramayana paintings were acquired by the then British Museum Library in 1844 in the form of bound volumes, but were only available to scholars. When their condition began to deteriorate, the British Library had the paintings individually framed.

Ji, a renowned Indologist, scholar, paleographer and historian, has through his work inspired a love for Indian culture among generations of Chinese students and scholars. Besides the Ramayana, Ji has also translated such Indian classics as the "Shakuntalam" and "Panchatantra" into Chinese.

Ao is one of the 20-odd poor tribal craftsmen from Mokokchung, 162 km from Kohima, still practising the fast dying art. The tribesmen make furniture, baskets and other items using Nahor palmwood and oak, taken from the forest in their area. The tools they use are also primitive.

The artisans of the north Kolkata neighbourhood slog for six to seven months to create idols of goddess and her children Laxmi, Saraswati, Kartik and Ganesha as well as demon king Mahishasura that are worshipped in marquees set up across the city.
