The Congress leader was not hurt. Karunakaran was on his way from Kozhikode to Guruvayur in Thrissur district. He proceeded to Guruvayur in another vehicle, the police said. The accident took place about 60 km from here. He had suffered serious injuries in a car accident in 1992, when he was the chief minister.

SJVNL upgrades Dhaula Sidh hydropower project in Himachal

By IANS, Shimla : Hydropower company Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd (SJVNL) has upgraded the power-generation capacity of one of its projects under execution in Himachal Pradesh, an official said here Sunday. "We have decided to upgrade the power-generation capacity of the Dhaula Sidh hydropower project in Hamirpur district. Now, its generation capacity would be increased to 66 MW from 40 MW. This will, of course, help make the project more economically viable," SJVNL Deputy General Manager V.K. Verma told IANS.

A London court jury found landlord Balbir Singh Dhillon and his four accomplices Amarjit Dhillon, Mohan Singh, Charan Singh and Surinder Singh guilty of murdering 21-year-old Rizwan Yousaf in his rented one-room flat in East London in March this year.

Lawyer suspended for vulgarity

By IANS, Gandhinagar : A lawyer in Gujarat has been suspended from practicing in any court for three years on chrages of harassing a client's daughter through vulgar text messages. The decision was taken by the Bar Council of Gujarat Monday evening. Its executive chairman, Anil Killa, confirmed the decision saying that a three-member panel had found the advocate guilty. According to the council, Rajesh Ruparel, an advocate of Amreli, sent objectionable messages to Gitaben Shah, whose mother was his client. When the harassment continued, she complained to the police.

"This is a much-awaited first and I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Commander Donde for achieving this feat," Vice President Hamid Ansari said while welcoming him here at the conclusion of his over 21,000 nautical mile voyage. It had begun August 19, 2009, in the INSV Mhadei, the first fibreglass yacht constructed entirely in India. He sailed through the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean and the Arabian Sea. He also sailed along the Equator.

By IANS, Lucknow : A 40-year-old lieutenant colonel shot himself in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur district, the police said Friday. The police said that Ramendra Bajpai shot himself with his father's licensed revolver. His father is retired brigadier. "Ramendra Bajpai, who was posted in Guwahati, was found dead this (Friday) morning in his parents' house in Defence Colony in Kanpur," Inspector Satish Chandra Gautam told IANS on phone. The police say that "strained relations" between Bajpai and his wife could have prompted the officer to take the extreme step.

By IANS, Agartala : Tripura Director General of Police K.T.D. Singh died here Friday following cardiac arrest. He was 59. Singh, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1974 batch Tripura-Manipur cadre, is survived by his wife, a daughter and three sons. "Singh was in a critical condition and admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the government medical college here following a massive heart attack Wednesday while he was working in his office," said Pradip Bhowmik, senior cardiologist.

The NRIs can file their complaints with the state police and will also have the facility of monitoring the status of their complaints online with the launch of these NRI police stations. The first NRI police station was inaugurated by Akali Dal president and Faridkot Member of Parliament (MP) Sukhbir Badal here Sunday.

CPI-M leader Prabhakar Sanzgiri dead

By IANS, Mumbai : Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Prabhakar Sanzgiri, also a trade unionist, has died after ailing for two years, a party colleague said Tuesday. He was 88. Sanzgiri died late Monday at his Bhandup residence here after undergoing dialysis, Sugandhi Francis, a Mumbai district CPI-M committee member, told IANS. Sanzgiri is survived by his wife Suman, also a Maharashtra CPI-M leader, three sons and a daughter, Francis said. Sanzgiri entered student politics six decades ago and later worked among trade unions in the state.
